Stem Cell Transplant Yields Unintended Success..

Man Appears Free of HIV After Stem Cell Transplant. The transplant which involves intentionally destroying "a patient's immune system, leaving the patient vulnerable to infection, and then reintroduce a donor's stem cells (which are from either bone marrow or blood) in an effort to establish a new, healthy immune system." The patient was being treated for Leukemia, and had a rare form of HIV along with the cancer.

"Before undergoing the transplant, the patient was also found to be infected with low levels of a type of HIV known as X4, which does not use the CCR5 receptor to infect cells. So it would seem that this virus would still be able to grow and damage immune cells in his body. However, following the transplant, signs of leukemia and HIV were absent."

"There is no really conclusive explanation why we didn't observe any rebound of HIV," Hutter said. "This finding is very surprising."

Doug Fieger, R.I.P.

Lead singer of one of the greatest "Two hit wonder bands"ever died today. If you've only recently awoken from a 32 year long coma, here are the videos for "My Sharona" and "Good Girls Don't." If you were too young to be aware of The Knack in '79, you don't really have any frame of reference as to how Cool they were, and how massive their surrounding phenomena was. Before MP3's, before CD's(yeah, Youngbloods, there was a time before CD's), before MTV, before musical format fragmentation, Top 40 music was King, and if the radio was on in 1979, chances were good that the song coming from the speakers was "My Sharona."

Those relentless drums, that hypnotic bass line, the snotty, vaguely dangerous, I'm-gonna-fuck-you-girl-and-ain't nothin's-gonna-stop-me delivery by Doug Fieger.. Edgy enough to appeal to the Rockers, poppy enough for the masses (including wannabe-hipster parents), embracing New Wave/Power Pop energy at just that right time in musical history.. How could this song not be a monster hit? At the beginning of the 80's, The Knack looked like they would be the one of the biggest bands of the 80's. They drew comparisons to the Beatles(really for the way they looked, not their music), and the hype was huge, but so was the backlash (I forgot about "Nuke The Knack."). When their second, horrible album was released, it still sold two million copies, but with the exception of one minor hit (the awful "Baby Talks Dirty"), the band was done, their humiliating and indifferent decline as rapid as their explosive impact arrival had been two years before.

Doug Fieger was The Knack. He never achieved the success of "My Sharona" ever again, but the song did experience a resurgence in popularity through the movie "Reality Bites." And while The Knack's hits will never be confused with High Art, "My Sharona" still strums that timeless chord in a lot of people, not only conjuring up memories from their child or young adulthood, but, because there were no trendy synthesizers or dated gimmicks involved, the music stands apart from a set time, and just falls wherever the listener sets it. It's naughty, it's hyper, it's a great song to dance to in a crowd or in a frenzy all by yourself. It is Intangible, but damn it, "My Sharona" is still a great fuckin' song. And although, Doug Fieger did not give us much more than this one great song, he gave me and many, many people an anthem we will never forget.

Japan Earthquake/EQ Roundup - February, First Week

Inital reports of 6.6, downgraded to 6.4. The quake happened around Midnight, CST(06:10 UTC). The trend here is, that for the first week of February, there have been four 6.0 magnitude earthquakes or larger, and one each day the last three days. There have been fifteen earthquakes magnitude 5.0 to 5.9.

Most of these quakes were within the "Ring of Fire," which is prepetually active, and the only aspect of note to those quakes is the escalated intensity of 6.0 quakes. The two areas outside the "Ring" to monitor is Yellowstone, which experienced a pretty intense "Earthquake swarm" last week, and this one, near Cumbre Vieja. And Cumbre Vieja is one area that, hopefully, will remain still for a loooonng time, lest this happens..

This has been bothering me, too. I want to like Obama, but not only is there very little difference in his actual governance compared to Bush, militarily he's doubling the amount of troops (plus contractors!) in Afghanistan. Some hippie peacenik, eh? Who's in charge of the economy? Club Federal Reserve and Goldman Sachs. Further expansion of the Military Industrial Complex? Check.

You buy or do what the advertiser wants because of how they make you feel." Obama the Brand I really like: The President and his policies? Not so much.

What bothers me about this turn of political events is the perception of what's happening versus reality. The right wing noisemakers hammer on Obama for his "Socialist" leanings, when in actuality, he supports most of the same programs and same corporations they do. You'd think they'd be happy about his closet Republicanism, but that would be off script, wouldn't it? At least Bush and his gang of thugs were honest about their intentions. They didn't mind telling the rest of the country(and the world) to fuck off on a regular basis while taking what they wanted for themselves, their friends, and their cronies. Obama pays lip service to the coalition that brought him to power, yet continues to act just like Bush.

The outcome? Fox and the Right wing loonies will continue to howl(while getting what they want policy-wise, while the country continues its swing to the right--shrewd!!), Democrats and progressives will continue to be frustrated(and probably won't turn out for the mid term elections), abandon the party, and suffer a massive defeat in November, and still, nothing gets fixed. The Republicans win, the Teabaggers will be energized, the American corporate power structure will gain incredible strength(already has--thank you SCOTUS), and the rest of us remain screwed, having backed the wrong candidate from a field of wrong candidates.

Except Kucinich, of course!

It's great that you're concerned about the economic direction of this country. Just remember to be as aware as possible when assigning blame. Maybe blame those responsible for destroying our country's entire economic foundation. That process was greatly accelerated, oh, about November of 2000.. Teenage novelty acts, especially any prodigious talent, play well in any arena, including politics. With her oratory skills, she will develop a large and devoted following. Which brings us to.. her Oratory Skills..


She has the stage presence, intensity, and speaking abilities of someone much, much older. She is a natural born Orator. She might even be re-incarnated, or interpreted as such, her talent is so large.. But that's precisely the problem.

She has the fire, cadence, and charisma of a much older soul, but she either has the undeveloped right wing - vengeance - retribution views her parents or town carries, or her hatred runs deep from at least one other lifetime. These are not the belief driven actions of your average tween or teen! So, to recap.. she has never had a thoughtful examination of her beliefs, or she's had too thoughtful of an examination of her beliefs..

She will inspire great subjective support by those that think in the same subjective manner as she does. Passion, Projection, and Deification could run very high among her supporters. She could be mythologized with extra-spiritual implications. Violence is a defining aspect of her popularity and purpose.

Pakistanis, or other Indians with conflicting agendas, will contend she must be stopped. And there will be attempts. After all, a lightning rod attracts lightning. Maybe they'll succeed, maybe they won't. And tensions within the region will escalate.

Not to mention Blame, for the attempt or successful attempt on her life. The blame could focus on the Pakistanis, naturally, at first, then to any number of more local provocateurs, who might oppose her supporters' agenda. An attempt on her life is a good enough justification to escalate activities against her opponents whomever they may be.

And then, escalation, locally or regionally, will occur.

This is a potential scenario, and there are many more, but you get it. Who is this little girl? Will her popularity fade, or rise? Are we witnessing the introduction of a right wing populist juggernaut in the form of an angry child? The 1.3 BILLION people that live there (India population; Pakistan population) will know.. soon..
