Active Sunspot Shoots Off Intense New Solar Flare

Active Region 1515 continues to rotate towards us.. Yahoo News:

The sun fired off yet another intense solar flare today (July 5), the latest in a series of storms from a busy sunspot being closely watched by space telescopes and astronomers.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory snapped a daunting new image of a strong M-class solar flare that peaked this morning at 7:44 a.m. EDT (1144 GMT). The M6.1 flare triggered a moderate radio blackout that has since subsided, according to officials at NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The eruption came from a sprawling sunspot, called Active Region 1515, which has been particularly dynamic this week. In fact, the sunspot region has now spewed 12 M-class solar flares since July 3, NASA officials said in a statement today. The sunspot region is huge, stretching more than 62,137 miles long (100,000 kilometers) in length, they added.

This sunspot region has also produced several coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which are clouds of plasma and charged particles that are hurled into space during solar storms. Powerful CMEs have the potential to disrupt satellites in their path and, when aimed directly at Earth, can wreak havoc on power grids and communications infrastructure.

The CMEs that were triggered by this week's solar flares, however, are thought to be moving relatively slowly, and will likely not hit Earth since the active region is located so far south on the face of the sun, NASA officials said. [More Solar Flare Photos from Sunspot AR1515]

But, the sunspot is slowly rotating toward Earth, and scientists are still monitoring its activity.

"Stay tuned for updates as Region 1515 continues its march across the solar disk," officials at the Space Weather Prediction Center, a joint service of NOAA and the National Weather Service, wrote in an update.

X-class solar flares are the strongest sun storms, with M-class flares considered medium-strength, and C-class the weakest. Today's M6.1 eruption is a little over half the size of the weakest X-class flare, NASA officials said.
Radio blackouts can occur when a layer of Earth's atmosphere, called the ionosphere, is bombarded with X-rays or extreme ultraviolet light from solar eruptions. Disturbances in the ionosphere can change the paths of high and low frequency radio waves, which can affect information carried along these channels.
Radio blackouts are categorized on a scale from R1 (minor) to R5 (extreme). An R2 radio blackout can result in limited degradation of both high- and low-frequency radio communication and GPS signals, NASA officials said.
The sun is currently in an active phase of its roughly 11-year solar weather cycle. The current cycle, known as Solar Cycle 24, is expected to peak in mid-2013.

Two 6 Plus Magnitude Earthquakes Strike Near Panama

Check out the map.  While the earthquakes happened 200-215 miles away, they are located in the midst of four plates.  Anomalous, or Fore shock?

Worldwide, RSOE has logged quite a few larger quakes in the last few days.  Let's see if this week's busy full moon and new sunspots add any pepper to the already spicy tectonic mix.

I'm a little hungry.

Planet Next To Sun Deflects Solar Eruption: Again Dismissed As Lens Flare..

Seriously:  What's going on here?  Found it on Godlike Productions.  From You Tube.
Could this..  Sphere..  Initiate more solar activity just by its proximity?  Can it indeed "park?"  It's going to be an interesting summer!  Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Solar activity intensifies – Sunspot AR11476 unleashed a M5.7 Solar Flare – May 10, 2012

Here we go..  The Truth Behind The Scenes.  Excerpts:

Huge sunspot AR1476 is crackling with M-class solar flares and appears to be on the verge of producing something even stronger. The sunspot’s ‘beta-gamma-delta’ magnetic field harbors energy for X-class flares, the most powerful kind. Earth is entering the line of fire as the sunspot rotates across the face of the sun.

This morning, May 10th around 0418 UT, sunspot 1476 unleashed an impulsive M5.7-class solar flare. This is the 4th M-Class flare in 24 hours from this growing region.

Apparently, the almost-X class explosion did not hurl a significant CME toward Earth. NOAA forecasters estimate a 65% chance of more M-class flares and a 10% chance of X-flares during the next 24 hours.

Gigantor-Triangle Hole-Thing Opens On The Sun..

"What the hell is that thang?"
"I don't know, but take my pitcher with it!"

Seriously, what is this? It looks to be about one-fifth of The Sun's visible surface!  Combine this with the spherical object near The Sun spotted earlier this week, and we've got ourselves a genuine, bona-fide, simultaneous, anomalous occurrence!

Spaceweather calls it a Coronal Hole, and that solar wind from this hole could arrive here on Earth as early as the 16th.  If other geometric shapes appear on the face of The Sun, I will let you know, provided, of course, we're all not solar-microwaved first..

Don't forget to take your Vitamin D this week!

Found it all on Godlike Productions..

A Solar Flare Of Note, And Possible Trouble Ahead.

Simmering Sun: Summer Solstice Starts with Solar Storm  Space via Etemenanki.  Excerpts:

The sun unleashed a powerful solar flare and eruption Tuesday (June 21) just in time for the summer solstice: the first day of the summer in Earth's Northern Hemisphere.

Spaceweather.com officials said a moderate C7-class solar flare kicked off the solar storm and triggered a massive eruption of plasma, known as a coronal mass ejection. [Amazing Sun Photos From Space]

"Magnetic fields above sunspot complex 1236 erupted during the early hours of June 21st, hurling a coronal mass ejection (CME) almost directly toward Earth," Spaceweather.com stated in an alert.  "The incoming CME does not appear to be particularly potent; nevertheless, the cloud could trigger polar geomagnetic storms when it reaches Earth on or about June 23rd."

Some unusual solar readings, including fading sunspots and weakening magnetic activity near the poles, could be indications that our sun is preparing to be less active in the coming years.

The results of three separate studies seem to show that even as the current sunspot cycle swells toward the solar maximum, the sun could be heading into a more-dormant period, with activity during the next 11-year sunspot cycle greatly reduced or even eliminated.
..
"The solar cycle may be going into a hiatus," Frank Hill, associate director of the National Solar Observatory's Solar Synoptic Network, said in a news briefing today (June 14).

The studies looked at a missing jet stream in the solar interior, fading sunspots on the sun's visible surface, and changes in the corona and near the poles. [Photos: Sunspots on Earth's Star]

"This is highly unusual and unexpected," Hill said. "But the fact that three completely different views of the sun point in the same direction is a powerful indicator that the sunspot cycle may be going into hibernation."
