Fucking amazing. What a time we in which we live! Now, what are we gonna do with this? Waking Times.Full article:
In two independent experiments that defy the notions of Einstein, researchers have been able to stop, then restart a beam of light. Ordinarily, light travels at the speed of 186,282 miles per second, but the research team of Lene Hau, a professor of physics at Harvard, who in 1999 was able to slow light down to 38 miles per hour, has been able to trap light in a cloud of sodium atoms super-cooled to near ‘absolute zero.’
“It’s nifty to look into the chamber and see a clump of ultracold atoms floating there,” Hau says. “In this odd state, light takes on a more human dimension; you can almost touch it.”
In an independent experiment, an easier approache was tried by the team of Ronald Walsworth and Mikhail Lukin at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).
They shot laser beams through a dense cloud of rubidium and helium gas. (Rubidium, in its solid or natural form, is a soft, silver-white metal.) The light bounced from atom to atom, gradually slowing down until it stopped. No supervacuum or ultra-cold was needed. In fact, the chamber where the light stopped was at a temperature of 176 degrees F.
Both experiments accomplish almost the same thing, however, in the CfA experiment researchers were only able to store about half of the incoming light, and the storage time was about half that of Hau’s experiment.
Think of both contraptions as sophisticated light switches that control not just light but information. Incoming light can carry information expressed by changes or modulations of its frequency, amplitude, and phase. When the light stops, that information is stored just like information is stored in the electronic memory of a computer. To access the information, you turn on a control laser, and out it comes.
Remarkably, scientists are somewhat uncertain about the implications and practicality of this research.
“We hope for wonderful things,” says David Phillips, who worked on the CfA “stop light” project. “Our imagination hasn’t figured out what the possibilities are yet.”
However, there appear to be clear implications for using experiments like this to ultimately improve the speed of computers, potentially creating the possibility to shift from binary computing to quantum encoding of data.
Computers operating by these so-called quantum effects are much more efficient that those available today, or even on the drawing board. (“Quantum” refers to changes in the energy levels of the atoms.) Today’s machines represent information in bits, electronic combinations of zeros and ones. Bits represented by quantum states of atoms could carry much, much more information. Cubic inch for cubic inch, quantum computers could tackle problems that would stymie the most super of conventional computers. For example, they could perform many calculations simultaneously.
The eminent physicist Albert Einstein theorized that it was impossible for light to travel at a speed faster than 186,282 miles per second, and in this case he has not yet been proven wrong.
Einstein never said anything about slowing light down, now did he?

Have you ever had a déjà vu experience? It’s the feeling, or impression that you have already witnessed or experienced a current situation.
The term déjà vu is French and means, literally, “already seen.” It is a rather common, yet little understood phenomenon. Most of us have experienced being in a new place and feeling certain that we have been there before, but we have difficulties understanding how it is possible.
For a long time, this eerie sensation has been attributed to everything from paranormal disturbances to neurological disorders.
In recent years, as more scientists began studying this phenomenon, a number of theories about déjà vu have emerged, suggesting that it is not merely a glitch in our brain’s memory system. Psychologists have suggested that déjà vu may occur when specific aspects of a current situation resemble certain aspects of previously occurring situations. .. Alternative explanations associate déjà vu with prophecy, past life memories, clairvoyance, or a mystic signpost indicating fulfillment of a predetermined condition on the journey of life. Whatever the explanation, déjà vu is certainly a phenomenon that is universal to the human condition, and its fundamental cause is still a mystery. Another intriguing possibility is that there is a hidden connection between déjà vu and the existence of parallel universes.
As some already know, the multiverse is a theory in which our universe is not the only one, but states that many universes exist parallel to each other. These distinct universes within the multiverse theory are called parallel universes.
According to Dr. Kaku, quantum physics states that there is the possibility that déjà vu might be caused by your ability to “flip between different universes”.

Within the exotic world of macroscopic quantum effects, where fluids flow uphill, wires conduct without electrical resistance and magnets levitate, there is an even stranger family of "unconventional" phenomena. These effects often defy explanation by current theoretical physics, but hold enormous promise for the development of such futuristic technologies as room-temperature superconductors, ultrasensitive microscopes and quantum computation.
Last week's announcement by a Stanford team in Physical Review Letters that it has created the world's first dipolar quantum fermionic gas from the metal dysprosium – "an entirely new form of quantum matter," as Stanford applied physics Professor and lead author Benjamin Lev put it – represents a major step toward understanding the behavior of these systems of particles. And this understanding makes for a leap toward the supernatural-seeming applications that condensed-matter physics promises.
When the thermal energy of some substances drops below a certain critical point, it is often no longer possible to consider its component particles separately. Instead, the material becomes "strongly correlated" and its quantum effects become difficult to understand and study.Making the material out of a gas of atoms allows what is normally only observed on a nanometer scale to become visible. These quantum gases, the coldest objects known to man, are where researchers see zero-viscosity fluids – superfluids – that are mathematical cousins of superconductors. And: Dysprosium's status as the most magnetic element was crucial to overcoming this apparent impossibility. Because of the extraordinarily strong magnetic dipolar interactions between the dysprosium atoms, the particles were able to cool to below the critical temperature by colliding from afar, despite being quantum mechanically identical.
Thus far, the result of the Lev lab's high-tech efforts is a tiny ball of ultracold quantum dipolar fluid. But theresearchers have reason to believe that the humble substance will exhibit the seemingly contradictory characteristics of both crystals and superfluids.
This combination could lead to quantum liquid crystals, or quantum-mechanical versions of the liquid crystals that make up most electronic displays.Or it could yield a supersolid – a hypothetical state of matter that would, in theory at least, be a solid with superfluid characteristics.
Short answer? Technology speeds way past our wildest imaginings. Our future cannot be described in the same way we could not describe a CD to some one from the 1400's. A CD without a CD player, that is..
It's been a great week for unusual predictive analysis. Monday saw the release of the Webbots, and yesterday, Goro Adachi released Transit Ritual 2012, his first major post since September 27th of last year. His predictive style defies a conventional definition, and is an always interesting read. Excerpts:
All through life and history we've been sailing aimlessly through the river of time, and time is a condition that separates the present from the past and future. Limited awareness. We are here and we don't know why. Sometimes we think we can almost feel the secrets, the truth, hidden away in the "Hall of Records" be it in our DNA, Egypt, Mars... but always just out of our grasp. To "time travel" is to access the hidden side of reality, history, or destiny to find out who we really are. We aren't there yet, but from a multicontextual "big picture" perspective, escaping Earth's gravity represents or reflects a major first step. Multicontextually speaking, the closer we get to Mars and the more we learn about its history (including life), the closer we get to the edge of time, to hyperspace.
The Mayan calendar paranoia and discussions make the year 2012 an ideal temporal framework in which to microcosmically simulate or foreshadow the process of the Apocalypse, the lifting of the veil... the proverbial "ah ha!" moment... which is just around the corner. The 21st century is the designated end of the road where we have to "jump" out of time and become Prometheus ourselves.
It's long and involved, and if you're new to his writing, you should read prior posts for context. Goro Adachi uses a certain set of archetypes, and what at first seems almost dizzying becomes clearer with each inter-related article. And while disasters do play a role in his analysis, Goro Adachi's version of the future is overall, very positive. We are making evolutionary leaps towards Apocalypse in its most hopeful definition: The lifting of the veil. Global Consciousness is being coaxed awake, and when that happens; it will be wonderful.
In the meantime, Goro Adachi does his best to point us in the right direction, towards our eventual home. His is a vision of hope, almost a lone candle, the sole illumination against the ever accelerating darkness..

STS-75 1996 Tether UFO Incident: NASA's STS 75 Columbia Space Shuttle Tether Science Mission TSS-1R launched on February 22, 1996 from Kennedy Space Center Florida. The orbital altitude was 160 nautical miles with a mission duration of 15 days, 17 hours, 41 minutes, 25 seconds and a distance of 6.5 million miles traveled.
The payload deployed was an Italian built Tether designed to gather data on voltage generated across the Tether while in the ionosphere. During the operation the Tether snapped from the Shuttle on day three just short of full deployment of it's 12.8 mile length Tether causing it to speed away from the orbiter. The Tether moving through the ionosphere became electrically charged with as much as 3,500 volts or 480 milliamps drawing the attention of UFO's orbiting the Earth. Very large UFO passing by and then behind the 12-mile long tether on filmed after the tether break on STS-75, Februay 25, 1996. The video camera was being operated by astronaut Claude Nicolier Photo of the STS-75 mission showing a UFO and the tether. Note that the tether is between 77-100 nautical miles away from the shuttle Columbia. The tether is 12 miles long. The UFOs all pass "behind" the tether which allows us to view and measure their minimum sizes. Some are 2-3 miles minimum diameter.
Mmm.. Flying, Jupiter-sized donut with jet propulsion.. Arrrrrrrghhh..
Sweet. Despite the really annoying interviewer and audio, the video is interesting. The Huffington Post.Excerpts:
A lot of people have a hard time trusting lawyers as it is, but what about one who claims he was part of a secret government time travel program when he was a kid? Since 2004, Seattle attorney Andrew Basiago has been publicly claiming that from the time he was 7 to when he was 12, he participated in "Project Pegasus," a secret U.S. government program that he says worked on teleportation and time travel under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. "They trained children along with adults so they could test the mental and physical effects of time travel on kids," Basiago told The Huffington Post. "Also, children had an advantage over adults in terms of adapting to the strains of moving between past, present and future." Exploits: Basiago claimed he can be seen in a photograph of Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg in 1863, which he said he visited in 1972 via a plasma confinement chamber located in East Hanover, N.J. "I had been dressed in period clothing, as a Union bugle boy," he said."I attracted so much attention at the Lincoln speech site at Gettysburg -- wearing over-sized men's street shoes -- that I left the area around the dais and walked about 100 paces over to where I was photographed in the Josephine Cogg image of Lincoln at Gettysburg."(The boy on the left in the photo below).(At the link..) In addition, Basiago said he traveled to Ford's Theatre the night of Lincoln's assassination on five or six occasions. "I did not, however, witness the assassination," he said. "Once, I was on the theater level when he was shot and I heard the shot followed by a great commotion that arose from the crowd. It was terrible to hear." Basiago said each of his visits to the past was different, "like they were sending us to slightly different alternative realities on adjacent timelines. As these visits began to accumulate, I twice ran into myself during two different visits." Being sent back in time to the same place and moment, but from different starting points in the present, allowed two of himselves to be in Ford's Theatre at the same time in 1865.
Whether or not you believe him, he is articulate, focused and feels very comfortable with the topic at hand. I'm hopeful the concept is reality, so I hope Andrew Basiago is indeed telling the truth. Ladies and Gentlemen; Steve Burns with The Flaming Lips..
To explain: the team were looking for evidence of dark matter, the substance that is believed to comprise 83 percent of matter in the Universe. But it cannot be detected by the naked eye or by existing astronomical techniques. Instead it is detected indirectly, from the gravitational pull that it exerts on other phenomena.
Astronomers at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) said they had expected to spot evidence for dark matter swirling around the Sun after they mapped the motions of more than 400 stars in the Milky Way. But they found nothing. “The amount of mass that we derive matches very well with what we see — stars, dust and gas — in the region around the Sun,” team leader Christian Moni Bidin of Chile’s University of Concepcion said in a press release. “But this leaves no room for the extra material — dark matter — that we were expecting. Our calculations show that it should have shown up very clearly in our measurements. But it was just not there!
We are very close now, to a very large and complete transformation how we see Everything. Everything. That Science should have to ask more specific, or radically different questions is not a bad thing at all; A wrong corridor eliminated brings us one step closer to the right one. But the ways this transformation will effect us all, at the moment, have no context. The beginnings of these changes? They are already here.
The fascination for me is watching the entire process play out, our species collectively walking the tightrope towards Enlightenment, no net to protect us, Apocalypse always a mis-step away.. Kinda thrilling, even with the unforgiving consequences of failure, yeah? Glory? Or Burn? We are all about to find out!
Aaron O'Connell PhD is the first person to experimentally induce and measure quantum effects in the motion of a human made object, bridging the quantum and classical worlds. His breakthrough provides the most astounding evidence in history (outside of faith that is)that our reality isn’t what we’ve been told to believe, but is, in fact, something far more wonderful.
Thefirst of many indications our view of reality is about to.. Morph. What an amazing time: Scary as hell and exploding outward in every conceivable direction, good solidly mixed in with the bad. This.. Could be Good. Excerpts:
DATA from a major US atom smasher lab may have revealed a new elementary particle, or potentially a new force of nature.
But experts aren't ready to tell the rest of the world what it actually means just yet. They cautioned that more analysis was needed over the next several months to uncover the true nature of the discovery.
"There could be some new force beyond the force that we know," physicist Giovanni Punzi said.
"If it is confirmed, it could point to a whole new world of interactions," he told AFP.
While much remains a mystery, researchers agree that this is not the "God Particle", or the Higgs-boson, a hypothetical elementary particle which has long eluded physicists who believe it could explain why objects have mass. And: "My personal judgment is that this excitement is adding fuel to the fire for the next generation of results and discoveries that will be made at the LHC (in Europe) and elsewhere. (Nigel Lockyer, director of Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, TRIUMF.)
Ground level stuff.Very exciting! Two hundred years from now Historians might refer to this time as time before time travel (or right before..), or maybe the time when travelling via entanglement became a reality. As dangerous, crazy, apocalyptic, and outright dumb this moment in time is.. It's still an amazing time to be alive..
"After nearly 6 months of smashing particles, the Large Hadron Collider has seen signs of something entirely new. Pairs of charged particles produced when two beams of protons collide seem to be associated with each other even after they fly apart."
