Voter-fraud shocker?! On behalf of ... the GOP?

How they know there's voter registration fraud/suppression?  Evidently, because THEY'RE DOING IT!  L.A. Times.  Excerpts:

Republicans' current crop of "voter security" laws are Democrats' "voter suppression" laws.

For several years now, Republican-led legislatures have been loud in their concerns about what amounts to a solution in search of a problem: massive, organized voter fraud in order to steal elections. Real verified instances of organized, deliberate voter fraud can likely be counted in the scores at best, and Republicans have been ardent about using the specter of the now-disbanded ACORN group to raise a national warning.

Most spectacularly, South Carolina Republican Gov. Nikki Haley roused the troops at the Republican convention in Tampa, Fla., in August by repeating the completely boneheaded and inapt trope about the voter I.D. law of the sort her state approved (and which, like many such laws, is being challenged in federal courts).

"If you have to use picture I.D. to get onto a plane," she said, "it is common sense that you would use picture I.D. to protect the integrity of the voting process."

Another proof that common sense isn’t that common. Getting on a plane is a commercial transaction. Voting is a constitutional right. No resemblance whatsoever.

So get a load of what’s just happened.

There has emerged some potential voter fraud – possibly by a group hired by Republicans themselves, which puts me in mind of the verse in Matthew, in the Gospels, "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" which essentially means, who are you, Mr. Pot, to call the kettle black?

The controversy surrounds a Republican political consulting firm whose chief operated a voter registration project that was investigated by the Justice Department and several state officials in 2004 on fraud allegations; charges were never filed, and in this 2012 instance, GOP officials, including the Republican National Committee, have been scrambling to fire the consulting firm to contain the political fallout a little over a month before the elections.

This new dip into the same political hot water concerns a new group headed by the same man whose group is facing questions about suspicious voter registrations in swing states including Florida and Colorado. The GOP was paying the firm a reported $2.9 million to register voters. Several states, including North Carolina, are now looking more closely at voter registrations submitted by the group’s workers.

In the swing state of Colorado, a Fox News station reported on a young woman registering voters in Colorado Springs. In a video, she said that ‘’We’re out here in support of Romney, actually,’’ and then, when she was asked who she works for, risibly claimed – after a long pause -- to be working for the county clerk’s office.

The consulting firm at issue, Strategic Allied Consulting – love those innocuous, meaningless-sounding names, don’t you? -- was formed under that name just this year, but it is headed by former Arizona state GOP executive director Nathan Sproul. He’s a veteran of about eight years of voter registration efforts paid for by GOP interests, efforts that have drawn scrutiny in several states, North Carolina among them.  (Here's hoping for a thorough, retroactive investigation of Mr. Sproul and his every move during the last two elections!)
Interestingly, Sproul has put forth the same argument about voter registration drives that opponents of voter I.D. laws use: that if there’s any problem, it’s just with a few bad apples. There’s no fraudulent intent.  Riiiiight..   It looks like the GOP's problems are getting worse, not better.  Florida, I'm looking in your direction..  I know this won't be the only one, but this has been a really nice October Surprise, indeed!

Hey, Look At That! Religious And Political Repression, Shame, And Hypocrisy Strike Again!

GOP Candidate And AZ Sheriff Admits He’s Gay After Accusations Surface That He Dated An Illegal Immigrant  Gosh, where to start?  Do as I say, not as I do?  Pay no attention to the man behind the closet door?  Anti-immigrant, but he gots a taste for the hot sauce?  Oh, Sheriff Babeu, this is what happens when you throw your lot in with what should be your sworn enemies:  People point and laugh when your hypocrisy is exposed!  From Mediate.  Excerpts:

Arizona is currently in the midst of a very fiery sex scandal as Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, a well-known anti-illegal immigrant proponent and Republican Congressional candidate, has been exposed as gay by a source telling the Phoenix New Times that he was Babeu’s ex-lover, and that Babeu threatened him with deportation several times when he refused to promise to keep the affair under wraps. Babeu responded by admitting in a press conference that he was gay, stepping down (from)the Romney campaign(Ha!), and denying the rumors that he threatened anyone with deportation.

..
As the relationship soured, Babeu allegedly sent his lawyer’s after Jose. “The latest of the alleged threats were made through Babeu’s personal attorney, who’s also running the sheriff’s campaign for Congress in District 4,” according to the New Times. José provided text messages and the above photos, as well as an Adam4Adam (think OKCupid’s less self-important gay cousin) profile. Gay culture and politics blog Towleroad reports that the couple met through a Gay.com (Match.com’s less self-important gay cousin) profile. José began, he says, working with Babeu by keeping his social media and web work up to date, but they eventually began an affair. The Tuscon Citizen, another local publication, is deeming this a “sex slave operation,” but that doesn’t seem to be based on any information not in the Phoenix New Times report.

Turns out, Jose's not here illegally!  Let's see, Babeau and Jose dated for over five years, and the Sheriff doesn't know his immigration status!  Keen..  Observational..  Powers..  Bonus:  This was the guy from the McCain "build the fence!" commercial!  If this scandal were dessert, I'd have diabetes!

Already, some conservative sites(Won't link to these idiots) are calling out anyone calling out Babeau as "gay hating progressives."  Ask yourselves, douchebags, wasn't it social conservatives that made faggotry a life or death political issue in this country?  It's not "gay hating" as much as it is "hypocrisy hating," especially when there are sooooo many more important issues our country should be dealing with!  Damn, people!  Grow the fuck up and stop caring who kisses who, and concern yourself with what's crumbling faster:  Our economy, or our Infrastructure!?!

Also:  Will Fox News ever have Babeau back as a guest?

Former GOP Sheriff of the Year Busted in Gay Sex-for-Meth Deal

From Gawker.  Excerpts:

Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. was the beloved Republican sheriff of Arapahoe County, Colo., for nearly 20 years before he retired in 2002. In 2001, he was named national Sheriff of the Year. Yesterday he was arrested by the department he used to run for offering a man meth in exchange for sex.

I really do feel some degree of sympathy for this very conflicted man.  His Inner-Demons - Crazy Screaming Volume Control must be stuck on 11 and he can't turn it down..  So many instincts repressed and channeled elsewhere..  His tensions, now refined, made even more taut by his choice of occupation(with all accompanying  knowledge of Crime and Punishment and Societal Decay..  How far will we/he sink?).  A heretofore classic example of the extremes of duality one persona can assume:  The relentless crime fighter yin balanced by the meth smoking sodomite yang..  His inner dialogue; Chaos.  The last paragraph of Gawker's story is devastating in its irony:

It's not clear whether Sullivan's love of meth-sex may have predated his retirement. He was booked into that Arapahoe County Jail, which also goes by the name Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility.

Here stands a man in shambles:  His law enforcement achievements forever overshadowed by the hypocrisy of his actions, a joke for late night comedians and lovers of schadenfreude everywhere.  A cautionary tale of repression and addiction.  A goddamned shame that his sexual orientation so shamed the man that he could only act upon his desires through the use of methamphetamines..

It's too bad his gay guilt drove his life to ruin..  Can you imagine the headline had he chosen otherwise?  "Nation's first gay National Sheriff Of The Year recounts his obstacles to the top."

Can you imagine the positive impact this man could have had had he just told the homophobes with their shame issues poisoning his mind to simply Fuck Off?  I hope this man finds peace.  I hope this man can rebuild his shattered foundations, rising to the task of making sense of the destruction his inner demons and behavior have caused.  It really is ok to be gay.  Hopefully, he can now understand and respond accordingly..  Good luck, Sheriff Sullivan.  Your near-term future will not be easy.
